Management Interviewing focuses on experiences, behaviors, knowledge, skills and abilities that are job related. Interviewers are looking on how you manged people project and resouces.  

Use past work experience, activities, hobbies, volunteer work, school projects, family life - anything really - as examples of your past management skills. 
 

How would you answer these Top 10 Management interview questions?  

Manager Job Interview Question 1. :

Tell me about a project or situation that you supervised when you had to adapt and manage a change in project status, use your management skills or supervise and manage direct reports?

Interview Answer:  Show that you can adjust effectively to meet changing demands and tasks. An effective manager can quickly assess a new situation and adapt to it. The change management process skills are critical and you need to demonstrate that you can adapt.

Each change needs to be properly defined, considered and approved before it is implemented. Focus on developing a plan for change that addresses change on both a process level and on a people level. Careful and well thought-out preparation of the stakeholders for change and the ability to overcome resistance are key to successful change management. Your answer should emphasize your ability to plan properly and thoroughly for change.

All of your direct reports have suggestion for cutting corners or  a course of action, but you believe that the stance is unethical or would not be best for the company, how do you react?

Interview answer:  Management candidate must be able to express their views in profession and persuasive manner. They should not bend under pressure and should be able to stand up for what they think is right.

Have you ever had to discipline a problem employee? If so, how did you handle it?

This is a likely question if the position for which you are applying requires supervisory duties. Explain how you used problem-solving skills, listening skills, and coaching skills to help the employee. If those techniques turned the employee around, be sure to say so. If those techniques failed, tell how you followed the company's policies and what the end result was.

Describe your management style.

Try to avoid labels and putting ourself in a box. Some of the more common labels, like progressive, salesman or consensus, can have several meanings or descriptions depending on which management expert you listen to. The situational style is safe, because it says you will manage according to the situation.  If you use technology to manage people describe how you have done that in the past or would do that.  Talk about how you might micro manage certain task but take a hand off management approach on others.

How do you hire people?  What is your process to find out if someone is a good fit for your team?

Interview Answer:  These are questions that seek to judge you ability to assess people's fit within your team, and your company and take touch decisions based on what you know. You may answer that your decisions to fire or hire are both based on one principle, value addition to the job and company. Your answer should be able to ramify the reasons and methods you use for analyzing value-addition ability of an employee. Hence, you need to prepare for these type of interview questions.

Interview Answer:  Candidate should appear focused when deciding what needs to be completed first and show common sense in their decision making.  Try to use an example of a project that you were involved in and successfully completed.

Describe three components of your philosophy of management that demonstrate what you value and add, as an individual, to an organization’s culture and work environment?

What is your overall experience in setting budgets?

Interview Answer:  If you have managed budgets, talk about how you foretasted expenses and honestly state if you had any overages.  Describe your your style and talk about priorities.  Use terms like forecast, run rates and how you managed the process.

Tell me about a time when you reorganized a department or significantly changed employee work assignments. How did you approach the task? How did the affected employees respond to your actions?

Always have some questions prepared ready to ask your interviewers.  Not having interview questions ready is one of the three most common interview mistakes. Questions prepared addressing, where you will be an asset to the organization are good. How soon will I be able to be productive? and What type of projects will I be able to assist on?
